cPanel is a Linux-based hosting control panel that allows you to manage your website via a web based graphical user interface (GUI).
The automation tools provided are designed to simplify running and controlling the website using a tiered structure that allows different levels of access. Administrators and end users can control the different aspects of the server and your website directly through the web browser.
In addition to the GUI, cPanel also has command line and API-based access that allows third party software vendors, web hosting organizations, and developers to automate standard system administration processes.
cPanel is designed to function either as a dedicated server or virtual private server. Application-based support includes Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Perl, and BIND (DNS). Email based support includes POP3, IMAP, and SMTP services.
Basically, the cPanel is the control board for everything on the server. You can set up email accounts, manage files, install databases (such as WordPress), set up domains, etc.
